NOTES ON THE SPORT

(BI TELEGRAPH,) (From "Sir Lancelot.")

CHRISTCHURCH, 12th Nov

A pool- field contested the Port Cooper Hui'dlo race. Achilledes was at once taken to the front, and at the stand, with two furlongs gone, led Pai'aoa by six lengths, with Hylans the same distance away. Racing along the back- Paraoa reduced, the gap to four .lengths, Hylans still being some distance away. At the half-mile Paraoa. got to'within, a couple of lengths of the leader, but made- a faulty jump, which made the prospects of Achilledes appear unbeatable. Jrlylans put in a claim at the last fence, and, finishing best on the flat, had Achilledes settled a hundred yards from home, where Paraoa came fast, but failed to reach Hylans, who won by a: Beck, with. Achilledes about the same distance away.- ■Judging by the narrowness of the defeat-of the top-weight, .'he. must have* won'but for making a bad jump. He hasbe.en'in training.a long-time, and is-to be spelled and turned out. ■ SPRING NURSERY. All nine acceptors. started for the Spring Nursery Handicap. Gasbag/ whose first appearance it was at the meeting, divided favouritism with Listening Post After playing up at the start, Gasbag got the worst of it. When the course proper was reached, Listening Post was showing the way to Cantabile, with Wake next. Listening Post held ,the advantage gained at the start in the run. to the post, winning by two lengths from Wake, who was about a length and a-balf ahead of La Paix. Cantabile was fourth.- Gasbag, who was always in the ruck, looked as if the race would improve him. Listening Post, who ran second in the Irwell Handicap on the previous day, is trained at Riccarton by W M'Donald, and is by imported Solferino, and the first progeny of Eager Eyes, an American-bred maTe. FIRST SALUTE WINS OTAIO ' PLATE. All started for the Otaio Plat© except Paraoa. Glerishino and First Salute were the popular picks. Sea-sprite broke the line, but was steadied, and, going out of the straight, First Salute and Strathglass were in front, with Starland and John Barleycorn next. A t Cutts's Bingham shot to the front, and had a good break on the field when the mile post was reached, several horses being bunched behind the leader. Bingham was still in front racing along the top, where John Barleycorn and Starland were at the head of tho others. As they swung into the straight, just behind Binrfiam were John Barleycorn, Seasprite, First Salute, and Starland. Bingham and John Barleycorn were beater at the distance, where Firat Salute was doing his best. ,He was challenged first by Glenshine and then by Wardancer, a slashing finish taking place between the three. First Salute secured the verdict by half a head, from; Wardnn-eer, who was a head in front of Glenshine. CANTERBURY CUP TO MASCOT. Probably because the Greenwood stable was having a successful run,' Afterglow was sent out a strong favourite for tha long-distajice weight-for-age race, the Canterbury Cup. Affectation at once wont to the front, and led the field into the straight, with Mascot next. Passing the stand, with a third of the journey covered Affectation led Kilmoon, Mascot, Vagabond, Battle Song, Afterglow, and Lucid last. Passing Cutts's Kilmoon took a hand at the pacemaldng, and, passing the' mile > post, was three lengths ahead of Affectation. Coming-to the six furlongs Mascot headed Affectation, a-ndi half a mile from home headed Kilmoon. She came into tho straight full of running, and won in good style from Lucid, who got up in the. last few strides, and cut Affectation out of Eecond 'money. | Kilmoon was fourth, and Vagabond fifth. Afterglow was toiling in the rear a-11 tho I way, ana* finished absolutely last. Lucid ertme from last place, and ran second, so that evidently Afterglow was not good enough. Mascot ran fourth in tho New Zealand Cup, and met horses that finished in front of her on Saturday on better terms. Mascot came a.way from the rails at the finish, and took Affectation with her. Mr. M'Mabon gave Ashley Reed aWord of advice. MAIOHA SCORES. There were no defections from the Jockey Club Handicap. Melee was a hot favourite. Nothing went down better than Melee. Silver Link and Inali, who drew tho inside* positions, got the best of the send-off, and with a, furlong gone were showing out clear .of Demos, Xigi-itiya, and Hurry Up. Passing the six furlongs, Inah shot out and whs well clear when half the journey had been covered. Maiolia. was first' to get the lender coming into the- straight, and finishing well was not afterwards headed, winning comfortably by two eleiulengths from Elous, who finished well,' after being last out, Silver Link waa

three lengths away, with Kipling [ourth. Melee was one of the last to begin, and was always well buck, finishing fifth. Demos fell between the five and four furlongs posts, but his ri'dor escaped injury. Maioha ran two good races at tha same meeting last, year, and vort easily to-day. He made the third member of L. Wilson's team to score at the meeting. WARLOVE'S OAKS. Lovelock (who was sold by auction 1 yesterday), Ermine, and Link Up were taken out of the Oaks Stakes, nine starting Backers were divided between Rose Wreath and Warlove. After bolting half a mile before the start, Rose Wreath got the best of the jump-out, and going out of the straight was showing clear of Tortrix, American Beauty, and Miss Mimic. Royal Exchange moved up into fourth place at the mile, and was in front at the seven furlongs, where Miss i Mimic, American Beauty, and Tortrix were close -up, Rose Wreath having lost her position. Miss Mimic was clear at- the half-mile, whore Warlove improved her position. She' was just in behind the leading pair ae. they swung into the straight. Warlove was in charge at the distance, where Rose Wreath came through on the rails. Warlove lasted long enough to win by a head from St. Winnow, who got up m time to cut Rose Wreath out of second place. The latter would probably have done better with a stronger horseman, Warlove, a full sister to Warstep, was well handled by B. Deeley FAVOURITES FAIL. The scratching of Bonetter and Head Sea for the Randolph Handicap reduced the number of runners to twenty-four. The Trontham-trained Red Signal was the actual favourite. When the course proper was reached, Eight Bells and Flight Commander were at the head of affairs, Th<* former was being ridden at the distance, where- Bombproof came on tho outside, but Flight Commander finished best, and crossed the line with a length and a-half to spare from Russet, who headed Bombproof a hundred yards from vtho post. San Souoi and 'Steepholm were close up to the placed division. Just after passing the post .Fleetham fell, and Mandrake' came down ovor him. Mr. Luttrell did not fancy Flight Commander much, and ho paid a double-figure dividend, but not so much as backers of Russet leceived. ASTINOME LANDS AVON WELTER.. Waimatao, Bon Spec, Melee, Amythas, and Almoner were withdrawn from the Avon Welter Handicap, leaving in a field of eleven. Backers again rallied round Mac Duff, and he finished up a £500 better favourite than Aetinome Early Dawn, Cerebus, and Motuihi also carried over four figures. Gamecock showed a glimpse of his old form by appearing at the head of the field, and he was only headed by Astinome inside the distance. Arch Lassie van a good race, and beat the favourite for third money. lAstiriome did better^ to-day with an experienced rider than when ridden by an apprentice on the previous days.

When Mandrake fell, F. Ellis sustained a badly fractured skull, and doubts are expressed about his recovery. i The stewards opened an inquiry into the .cause of Demos falling in the Jookey Club, Handicap. In the concluding race Cerebus, ridden by S. Walls,''cut across the field. All three cases ivill be gone into on Saturday morning, before the racing ■starts. . . Deeley rode Astiriome to-day. He is putting up a good record, having ridden the winners of the New Zealand Cup, Derby, and Oaks. He should also add the Stead.Cup to his list, as Gloaming galloped a mile in record time yesterday morning. Moorfowl is the popular pick for the ■Electric Plate..
