MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Captain Hennah and Mr. R. D. Hanlon, J.P.s, presided at the Magistrate's Court this morning.
Seven first-offending inebriates were dealt with in the usual manner. Minnie Pomroy and Louisa Maitland, second offenders, who had spent the week-end in the cells, were convicted and discharged. John Francis Webster, a third offender, must pay a fine of 10s or go to- gaol for 48 hours. Peter M'Carron admitted having damaged cell fittings at the Taranaki-street 1 Police Station after his arrest for drunk- I enness. He was convicted and discharged I for insobriety, and ordered to m&kc good ! the damage done (12s 6d) or to go to gaol for 48 hours. William Anderson was fined £3, in default 14 days' imprisonment, for having .used obscene language in Courtenayplace. . j Egmont Button was remanded for a week on a charge of being an idle and | ! disorderly person. For some time past j I the man has been sleeping out and be- I | having in a rather strange manner. [ Lewis Podesta and Arthur Joseph Langham were each, fined 10s for having behaved in a threatening, manner in the city. Thomas Edward Owen, who had acted in self-defence, was convicted'and i discharged for a similar offence. Oswald Norman Thomas, who had been bailed out on a charge of threatening behaviour, was fined 40s. Joseph Bradbury and William Smith will- appear again on Friday to answer charges of having stowed away on the steamship Kurow on her recent voyage from Newcastle, to Wellington. "This man has been five times previously convicted for theft," said SubInspector Emerson, when Patrick M'Carthy pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen a watch valued at £3, the property of William Arthur Pearcs. A sentence of 14 days' imprisonment was imposed. , ■ j Nellie Hadfleld and James Walker, who aro alleged to have been concerned in the management of a house of ill-fame in Holland-street, will be brought before the Court again to-morrow. .
