A REBATE ISSUE

TO 188 EDITOR. j Sir, —I should: be glad if you could ad-1 viso members of the N.Z.E.F., who have j obtained loans from the , Government i under the Discharged Soldiers' Settlement Act, whether they are entitled to (the. 4 per cent, rebate for .instalments paid on account of the mortgage, if thesa j amounts are paid, within the two weeks from due date. I have one of the mortgages, and on referring fcho matter to an authority (through my lawyer) was informed that'we are not entitled to this rebate, and that the rebate was required to cover administration. As I cannot help thinking that this is not the case, in -view of the fact that civilians are allowed the 4 per cent rebate on workers' mortgages, and as this matter affects a large number of returned men who are building homes for themselves, I should suggest that you should give your reply through the medium of your valuable paper, and so settle a very knotty problem for a large number of returned men who are in the same boat as myself.—l ■am, etc., INQUIRER. [Our correspondent refers to "workers' mortgages." If by this he means workers' dwellings, we are assured that ho is in error, because up to the present no rebate of' interest has been allowed to workers who have acquired homes under the workers' dwellings scheme. On page 51 of "The Soldiers' Guide" it is stated':. —"Soldiers settled under the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act are entitled to. the same rebate of rent on prompt paymentas the ordinary Crown tenants." The rebate of rent allowed ordinary Crown tenants on prompt payments is 10 per cent. This is the rebate which soldier cettlers also receive.—Ed.]
