BAH.IATUA, 30th January. Messrs. R. H. ■Aldwwth (judge) and Angus Keith (starter) acted at a Pahiatua Meeting for (be first time, and both carried) out their duties in a satisfactory manner.

The Maiden Hack Race field wae reduced' from 29 to 16. The Trenthamtrained Philomela was a good favourite, Statuette and Astinotne being next bestbacked. Philomela di-ew No. 2, but started from the inside, and! had every | chance to score had she been good I enough. Statuette began smartly, and led throughout. Astinome, who is improving with, racing, beat the favourite for second place. Statuette is owned and trained! by Luke Wilson, formerly a well-known rider. She is a sister to Arch MareHa, who has recently done well in handicap «nr«nts in Australia. Seven withdrawalß from the Ballance Hack Handicap reduced the number of nranera to six. Bafcti© Array and Willys Knight, place-getters at Foxton, monopolised the betting. Arihia and Greta, a good-lookiiig fiHy by Rokeby— Miss DaJrympJe, led to the turn, where the two fancied: candidates took a band. Battle Array scored by a couple of lengths. This was the first success of Battle Array (Signer—Carisshna), -who is owned by a WeUingtonian who race* as "Mr. Soames." ' An inquiry wae held into some bumping during the race. W. M'Ewan, rider of Baiknd, was fined £2 and caubionedi for careless riding. There w«re only five runners for the Hack Flying Handicap. Borealis '(the Feilding Maiden winner) was a good favourite, but could only get third to Zabism (ridden by H. Gray) and Idle Talk. Goldi Problem carried top weight into fourth place. Zabiam (Hymettus—r Witch Hazel) ia trained at Opaki, and earlier in the season won at Mauton. Crotvhnrst, Biwitapu, and Roumama were taken out of the principal ev«nt, leaving in eight runners. Battle Song was a strong favourite, Henry Clay being slightly more in cksmaad than the bracket (Hydtus and Municipal). Orleans delayedl the start, but was got away, with the rest of the field. Altercation led for about half a mile, with Elocution next. The kvbter went on, in front half a mile from home, and lasted long enough to get ibe verdict by the narrowest margin from Battle Song. Henry Clay was badly placed in the earlier stages, but got a clear run on the rails from the turn, andi -was ckee up in third place. Multaine weighed in fourth. Orleans was always at the tail end of the field, although Multscipal was last when they passed the post. Elocution had not won ,a race for some time, and her supporters got a good price.' Gold Problem, Astinome, and. Zabism (carrying a IMb penalty for the previous win) were brought out again in the M«kuri Hack Handicap. Samarang, who was a slightly better favourite than Astinome, was always well placed and won with something to spare from Restful (trained by J. H. Prosser at Porirua) and Zabism. Gold Problem was again fourth. Samarang (Ghoorka— Lady Officer) won at Ashhurst. All the eleven acceptors started for the Konini Hack Handicap. Greta and The Speaker were malting their second appearance. The last-named tried to win from end to end and was only collared by Penury Rose (who was sent out favourite) inside the distance. The Trentham trained Esperance (who carries the same colours as Restful) was' among the unplaced division. Rawakore (who was not brought to the meeting) was the only withdrawa from file Telephone Handicap. Trentham Rose was moving in when the barrier ■went up, and slipped the field at the post. She had a couple of lengths to spare from Crowbnxst, who ran a good race, considering he was giving away a stone and a. start. Lady General made her reappearance in the race, but is not quite ready. C. Emerson scored his third win for the day on Trentham Rose.

A good field of fourteen paraded for the Welter Hack Handicap. Prior to the start Glentour unseated his rider (T.

Young) and bolted to town. Something went wrong with Naughty Giro's gear, and she was pulled up after they had gone a furlong. Papanui and Battle Array (carrying a 101b penalty) were prominent for five furlongs, where the former dropped out and Red Signal joined Battle Array. In the run to the post Red Signal did best, and won nicely by a clear length. La Pucelle, who met with some interference at the start and came fast in the straight, was third. Royal Battery was again in fourth place. Red Signal put up 101b penalty for the Trentham win, and was ridden by H. Gray, making Gray's second win during the afternoon.
