OUT-BIDDING
EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
"LEFT."
Up and down New Zealand people say : "Greater inducements must be offered to attract the bright young men to the teaching profession." Recently a little was done, but this little is regarded as much below the quantity needed. Replying to a deputation to-day, the Minister of Education (the Hon. J. A. Hanan) again said that the Public Service Commissioner could outbid the Education Department in the payment of cadets. The whole efficiency of the Public Service depended on a sound system of education, with competent teachers; yet the profession which was to promote the general efficiency had the disadvantage that the Public Service could offer more attractive pay to beginners.
