PETONE AFFAIRS

j ' A largely-attended meeting of Petone citizens was held last evening in Jones's Hall, Sydney-street, Petone, for the purpose of forming an association to take an interest in the affaire of the borough. Mr. H. Hurroll outlined the preliminary work that had already been done. Mr. ; G. T. London moved that tho association ' be named the Petope Progressive Ass'oI ciation. This, he said, would .embrace ' all sections of the community—the rentpayer &s woll as the ratepayer. The motion was seconded by Mr. Speers and carried unanimously; The following officers and committee were elected : President. Mr. G. T. London: vice-president, Mr. H. Hurrell; committee, Messrs. Q. D. M-'Ewen, P. Cairns, H. Udy, H. Sibun, D. Bedingfield, W. Burd, G. Cook, V. Powell. W. Cody, and G. Jones. The president, on taking the chair, said the association should not only be in existence to advise, but to enforce. While the present council might have dono many things wisely, it had done many things very unwisely. Want of criticism was a sign of decadence in the community, and he was glad to see the interest being taken. Though Petone was not the hub of the universe, yet it was not at all a bad place to live in, and people should take an interest in their town, and have faith in its future. A suggestion was made that a debate on municipal affairs might be arranged bei tween the president, Mr. London, and ; the Mayor, Mr. M'Ewan. Mr. London I said he would be pleased to lay his views i before the next meeting, and if the Mayor disagreed with those views he would be glad to discuss the matters in a friendly way. It was decided that Mr. London should give an address on munii cipal affairs at the next meeting, to bo j held in a month's time. Other speakers I who addressed the meeting were Messrs. Cairns, Bedingfield, and Jones. A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. Jones for the interest he had shown. Before closing the meeting, 42 persons enrolled themselves as members of the associaj tion.
