GENERAL FOOTS PINCERS

! ; LONDON, 23rd July.. Now that the French have crossed the Soissons-Chateau Thierry road, only nineteen miles separate the Allies' batteries on the two flanks of the salient. As the heavy concentration of fire covers six miles on either side, the Germans have only a passage seven miles wide in which to retreat or bring reserves of men, ammunition, and food. One hundred thousand Germans are isolated, in spite of the cfever manner in which the Germans are sacrificing their rearguards to enable the larger units to escape from Foch's pincers.
