POSITION ON REIMS-MARNE FRONT

THE WORK OP THE BRITISH TROOPS y

(published in the times.) , . LONDON, 23rd July.

Mr, Gerald Campbell writes: "The enemy has now brought sixty-seven divisions into action ori the whole of the Aisne-Massiges front. The net result is that they not only have largely exhausted their strength, but have lost more ground thari they gained. ..-'.-■,.'■ ; "We are crushing all counter-attacks. The French have made especially good progress above Chateau Thierry, and are constructing additionalfbridges over the Marne, with a view to increasing the weight of the advance northwards. Our patrols have discovered only German rearguards holding Baslieux, though the enemy's artillery is keeping up a hot fire over the valley. The Anglo-French face between Baslieux and St. Euphraise is very strongly held; the enemy's position for, seven miles being intended to protect the left flank during the retirement. The British arrived on 19th July, and since then have been continuously attacking and gradually progressing. They are now well beyond Gourmas and Bouilly. They took seven hundred prisoners. The Italians shared in the attack; and displayed splendid vigour. Two picked German divisions have been withdrawn, shattered, while a third has been practically wiped out. Fierce encounters continue." " . [reuters telegram.)
