STRONG DEFENCE AT MARNE CROSSINGS
RAPID DEVELOPMENTS NOT TO SE EXPECTED
LONDON, 23rd July. . The Americans have captured Buzany (five miles souih of Soissons), which brings them half a mile^ beyond the Soissons-Chateau Thierry road. They have also captured Jaulgonne (on the Marne, seven miles north-east of Chateau Thierry). , . . > ■ , The French are experiencing great difficulties in forcing.the passage of the river further along the Marne Valley, owing to the enemy's resistance. The French stormed the heights of Courcelles yesterday, and crossed the Marne at !Pont-a-Binson, south of Chatilloii. The enemy launched, a heavy counter-attack, from the direction of Veridiers, which was beaten off. The British troops southwest of ESeims captured Petit. Champ Wood, near Marfaux. The situation is still favourable, but the public should not expect rapid developments; There are indications that the enemy is evacuating the bottom pocket, which has Uecoine too hot, and may take up a natural line of defence on the Ardre or Hie Vesle.' / . ■ ", :
