TURNING-POINT OF THE CAMPAIGN

HUN? PLANS UPSET

DANGER TO PARIS REMOVED

(B* TELEGRAPH.—UNITED tBESS ASSOCIATION. —COFSBIGHT.J (AtJSTBALIAN-NEW; ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received July 25, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 24th July.

General Maurice writes : The fact that the Crown Prince had reorganised his forces between Soissons and Chateau Thierry when General Foch attacked; indicates that he intended, to follow up his advance across the Marne by an attack upon Paris, probably ooupling with another attack between Amiens and Montdidief. General Foch'B counter-Stroke has therefore not only wrecked the German offensive, but has upset the enemy's plans for the future. General Foch's new attack at Montdidier' has completed this upset, and even if it is only a local affair it should, together with our own recent progress at Villers Brfetonneux, remove the danger which has hung over Paris for six weeks. The Crown Prince's efforts to extricate himself from the mess in which he is involved will have an important effect- on the general situation. Counter-attacks improvised in the midst of a "battle in order to save a desperate situation are always costly. It is certain that the Gentians' losses have been higher in the last few days arid the, exhaustion of their reserves greater than in tile first days of the abortive offensive. The situation is so impiwed from every point of view that we may without extravagance regard General Foch's counter-attack as the turning point of the 19i8 campaign.'*
