WOMEN ON FARMS

THE PROBLEM OF LABOUR.

In. these days of stress and shortage of workpeople owing to the war, attention has naturally been more tßari ever directed to the question of the organisation of women's labour for farm work. The matter was gone into fully by the Board of Agriculture, who yesterday repotted as follows to the New Zealand Council of Agriculture, at present sitting in conference in Wellington.:—"The subject was frilly considered by vis, and advantage was taken.of the opportunity to discuss it with the National Efficiency Board at a conference of both boards. The general feeling of the members of our board was that it was .not necessary to take any stops to train women for agricultural work, as. plenty of country women are qualified now to assist •in connection with farm work, and they are already doing it very extensively, much more so than is usual. The conditions of farm lifo in New Zealand being different to what they are in Great Britain, the assistance which women can render on farms in the Dominion is more a matter of inclination than of training, except perhaps as regards dairying, in which women would certainly require training, and this they can best obtain on the dairy farm. The conclusion come to in regard to the proposal was that there did not appear to be any necessity for dealing with .the matter at; the present time, and the Prime Minister and the Minister for Agriculture wore advised accordingly. We are. very glad to know that the Government is considering the establishment of & central ■horticultural station, where women will be able to receive education in this science, as it is excellent work that women can undertake satisfactorily-"
