NEW INDUSTRIAL AGREEMENT.

The Conciliation Council, under the chairmanship of the Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton), arrived at a complete settlement yesterday in the Metal Workers' Assistants' dispute. Both sides expressed great satisfaction at the fact, and congratulated Mr. Newton on the way he had conducted the proceedings. It was decided that the week's work, should consist of 47 hours, 8£ hours to be worked on five days of the week and 4A on Saturdays. The wages were increased by Id per hour to Is 6d, as against the workers' demand for Is 7d. The provisions for the employment of boys and youths remain the same. The overtime clauses were altered considerably, and now provide:—All work done in excess of the hours mentioned in clause (1) shall bs deemed overtime, and paid for at the following rates :—Time and a-quarter for the first two hours, time and a-half for the second two hours, double time thereafter until the ordinary time for commencing work. No worker who has worked during the day and all night shall be paid double time for all work done on the following day. 'Workers required to commence work between the hours of 6 a.m. and the ordinary time for starting work shall be paid at the rate of time and a-quarter for such time. For work done on New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day. Christmas Day, and Boxing Day double rates shall be paid. There have been slight alterations in regard to the "dirt" money clause and country work, but the suburban work clauses, and those relating to preference and underrate workers, remain the same as in the old award. It was agreed that the new terms would come into force on 20th June, and continue in force until 14th October, 1919, when other awards connected with the metal:worfcing industry terminate.
