EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of the Wellington ' Education Board was held to-day, when there were present- The Hon. J. G W: Aitken (chairman), Messrs. A W. Hogg, E. H. Penney, B. M'Callum, T. Forsyth, E. A. Wright, W. Allan, E. P. Eishworth, G. London, W. H Field, and W. Kebbel.

, Adwice was received that the Minister for Education was prepared to make adjustments on account of special grants for buildings. The secretary stated that the difference between grants, estimates, and actual costs amounted to.a considerable sum. The Department would now make up this difference where it was shown that the money was actually expended.

The Department wrote notifying an increase from 6d to 9d in, the capitation allowance to provide for relieving teachers. On con-.lition that the varioua boards adopted a- definite set of rules with regard to the use of the funds (which should be supplemented from tha board's general account) and payments to teachers on sick leave at the. rate of full pay for one month md half-pay for one month, after five years' service. The secretary stated that the fund had been in debit, on the 6d capitation, but • the 91 capitation would place it in credit. Li the past, however, the board had not always granted the second month's halfpay. The communication was received with thanks.

The Education Department acknowledged the board's communication regarding salaries and allowances of pupil teachers probationers. The chairman stated that since this letter was received, the Council' of Education had made a very strong recommendation to the Minister and the Department on the lilies of the board's suggestion. Applications for aided schools at Maud Island, Waitai, uiid Pine Valley were referred to the inspectors for report.

It was advised\ that the Coonoor School and the Scarborough Run aided school had been closed.

•The statement of accounts to 18th February showed: Receipts eince last board meeting 1 £12,573 17s; payments for January, £10,333 17s lOd; general payments for current, month, £4676 15s; total now authorised, £15,010 12s lOd.
