MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. S. E. M'Carthy, S.M.,at the sittings of the Magistrate s Court this morning. A soldier was convicted on a charge of drunkenness, and was ordered to be handed over to the military authorities.

An elderly women named Mary Ryder, charged with loitering for the purpose of prostitution in Kent-terrace last night, was convicted and sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labour. Patrick Simmott, who has a "record" of drunkenness, wasl fined £3, with the alternative of 14 days in gaol, for a further offence.

. William Lynch and William Patterson were each fined 20s, with the option of seven days' hard labour, for similar offences.

Daniel M'Farlane was remanded till Monday on a charge of "drunkenness, in order that enquiries may be made at Roto Roa to ascertain if there is a vacancy for him in that institution.

Charles Mack who had entered the Salvation Army's Workmen's Home and used obscene language on the premises, and again in Buckle-street, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment with hard labour. On a charge of drunkenness, Mack was convicted and discharged. David Ignatius Peterson was charged with drunkenness, obscene language, and resisting a constable in the execution of his duty. On the second-named charges Peterson was sentenced to six months' hard labour, and on the other counts was convicted and discharged.

William Howard Booth was further remanded till Friday on,charges of false pretences pommmittted in December and January, in Australia.
