THE WEATHER

CHANGE PROBABLE NEXT WEEK

There was an unexpected cold snap in the early hours this morning, the temperature being only six degrees above freezing point at about five o'clock. During the past week there has been a great amount of evaporation, and from Sunday morning at 9 o'clock till the same hour this morning 1.12 inches of water evaporated from, a surface of water exposed to the sun and wind. No rain has fallen during that period, and consequently the ground is drying up rapidly. A storm has been in evidence in the north, and easterly and north-easterly gales have been reported north of Auckland, but variable winds have ruled elsewhere, with easterlies predominating. The weather has been warm and fine generally, but with, increasing cloud and haziness.

The forecast is for a falling barometer everywhere, with increasing cloudy and hazy conditions. A change will probably follow, and rain is likely to fall early in the week.
