OUR MILK SUPPLY
A PROTEST BY THE MAYOR.
In reply to a question by a Post reporter as to whether anything had been done respecting the milk question, the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) stated that the report of the expert was available, and the Health Committee of the council would meet at 4 o'clock to-morrow afternoon to consider it.
" I feel it my duty to the councillors and myself to enter "a most emphatic protest against the attitude of thoEe in the community who have attempted to settle the blame for what has occurred at the milk depot on the Mayor and councillors. Criticism I have always invited, but biassed opinions are neither honest nor helpful to solve the difficulties that have arisen. The public, farmers, and vendors were told in plain language that the council could hot launch the scheme of municipal control and distribution while the war lasted. The Minister of Finance, rightly, could not permit the raising of a loan for municipal purposes until his financial requirements had been thoroughly established. The farmers then said that they demanded a temporary clearing-house, and.unless one was provided they would/cease to send their milk to the city, and would send to the factories instead, The council decided to provide the cWring-house, and left the selection of tne site and the class and size of the building and its equipment to their expert, who was also in consultation with the farmers' expertl The engineer's plans were submitted to the two experts, and the whole undertaking was set up on their advice. The Mayor and councillors, rightly, did not interfere or advise in any particular.
" I think," said the Mayor, in conclusion, "that the public should value the action of the Mayor, who acted promptly, and after seeing what was taking place on the first day, would not permit similar conditions to be continued even for another day. The report, when, available, will amply justify the action that has been taken by the Mayor on behalf of the City Council."
