ENEMY EFFORTS BROKEN
EXTENSIVE AERIAL OPERATIONS

... LONDON, 17th September. Sir Douglas. Haig reports : The enemy raided the- neighbourhoods of the Ypres-Comines Canal and eastward of Messines. A few of our men are missing. The enemy heavily bombarded our lines northward of Langemarck,- and hie infantry attempted an advance. Our counter-barrage- prevented his attack developing. There is considerable artillery activity on the Ypres sector. Our aeroplanes co-operated with the artillery in spite of the fact that the wind favoured the enemy. We dropped three tons of explosives on two aerodromes east of Courtrai, an aerodrome and ammunition dump north-east of Cainbrai, and also on the enemy's billets and hutments. We brought down eight of the enemy's machines. Four of ours are missing. -. (Received September 18, 8.30 a.m.) • LONDON, 17th September. Sir Douglas Haig reports : We made successful raids east of Epehy and in the neighbourhood of the Arras-Douai railway. South-east of Gavrelle we destroyed dugouts, emplacements, and dumps. The Dutch newspaper liandelsblad states that the civilians have evacuated Joulers, and' are now evacuating Ostend. ' LONDON, 17th September, Admiralty, per Wireless Press. —A German official message states : Th* artillery duel in Flanders increased sevet-al times to a violent driimfW There is also intense filing on the Aisne and in the Cliampagne and Verdun areas. The enemy lost eighteen aeroplanes yesterday.
