TE HIWI BOWLING CLUB

The annual meeting of the Te Hiwi Bowling Club was held at the Grand Hotel last night, the chair being occupied by Mr. E. J. Hill. The report mentioned that the preceding season has been most successful." A number of different factors make the season stand, out as one of more than ordinary importance. The fact that the Dominion Bowling Association tournament was held in Wellington ..during the year marked a period in the history of the game of bowlg. Another factor necessary, tc- make a successful season is a good playing green., As members had now for so many seasons enjoyed playing on a surface almost perfect, it seemed unnecessary to again express appreciation of the efforts of the club's president to work out his life's ideal. Although showing signs of wear towards the end of the season, the green promises to be in excellent condition by the time. the opening day comes round. The ends have been most ca-refully returfed, and it is expected that while playing with : equal accuracy the. green will stand the wear and tear better than in previous 'years. The club did not take, part in Pennant matches.^ Interclub games were, however, arranged for almost every Saturday, and were as keenly contested as the hardest-fought Pennant matches. An exact -record has not been kept of all the games; but Te Hiwi was successful in winning, except on one or two occasions. The club.wa6 represented in the champion rink, pairs, and single competition^ arranged "by the centre) but. the club's representatives did not progress very far. towards the finals. Two rink 6 took part in.(he Dominion. tournament, one of which succeeded in getting through the sectional play, but failed in the second round of intersectional play. In the pairs competition the N club's representatives, Messrs. Ferguson and Fairly, reached the final, and although all members would have been very glad to have seen the honour come to the club, but the highest appreciation can be expressed regarding the sterling., game played by the victors. ]■■

The far-reaching effect of the war was felt probably less in the game of bowls than most of the other classes of recreation. It was something to the credit of the club that, amongst its small, membership two of the members had enlisted since last season. Mr. W. Wiggins was on .his way to the front, if he had not already reached there, and Mr. A. E. Duncan was in training at' campRegret was expressed at the resignation of Mr. D. Skinner, who had rendered most valuable assistance to the club. Others \v.ho had resigned Would also be missed. . .*...-

'The balance-sheet presented (which, with the report, .'was, adopted) .was of a satisfactory character. ■ By reason of the facilities, provided by the president, the expenses were very light, and these have been met by-the. available revenue./ The following, officers were duly /elected : —Life president, Mr. C. Hill, sen.; life vice-president, Mr. E. J. Hill; execui tive committee, Messrs. Innes, Houldeworth, Warwick, and H. R. Smith; hon. secretary, Mr. B. W. Shallcrass; lion.' treasurer, Mr. H. E. Smith; sole selector, Mr. R. Houldsworth. It was decided that the subscription for the ensuing year should be 30s. A discussion on bowling matters, generally followed, after which the health of the life, president was drunk withmusical honours. '
