INCREASE ON! CIGARETTES.

The House of Representatives resumed consideration of the Finance Bill in Committee yesterday afternoon.

At clause 39, dealing with Customs and Excise duties, Sir Joseph Ward, in answer to a question, said that the additional revenues to be derived under the various, headings * we.re estimated, as under :—Spirits, £38,984; tea, £99,000; wine, £2120. -The clause was passed, the discussion being relegated to the schedule. It was decided to raise the duty on cigarettes'.(as proposed in. the original statement) from 3s 6d to 5s 6d per lb (manufactured), and from 2s to 4s per lb (made by hand). ' , .
