"I-.-ask for a heavy penalty; it is not fair . that tho defendant should continue to sell tobacco when the tobacconists are compelled to be closed," stated the Inspector of Awards (Mr. G. H. Lightfoot) in preference to tho case of W. Lee, fruiterer, of Lambton-quay, heard in the Magistrate's Court to-day.. Lee was charged -with- selling cigarettes after hours,, arid the Magistrate (Mr. L. G. Reid, S.M,),' imposed a penalty of 20s with costs." ■

A case, was-heard in the Magistrate's Court' this morning in which L. G. Speedy,- Ltd., sued Blake and Co., auctioneers, Wellington, for the sum of £31, alleged to have been wrongfully detained by ,tlie defendants as commission out of the proceeds of a sale by auction of the plaintiff's furniture at his residence at Kilbirnie. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the full amount. Mr. A. M. Salek appeared for plaintiff and Mr. P. Jaeksoii for the defendants.

In reporting the appeal of Thos. Blyth, jeweller, of Petone, yesterday, ■ it' was stated that he "had . since been able to dispose of hie business."- This should have'read "ho had been unable to dispose of his business, though he had advertised it in several places."

A: fine'of £50 has. been imposed in the case of William Lyen, a builder, who pleaded guilty, before Mr. Frazer. S.M., to a charge ot illegal, betting on the Ellerslie Bacecouree, on 29th December. Accused was previously fined £20 on a similar charge.
