From enquiries made to-day it appears that the elderly man, Michael Kelly, who was fatally injured through being knocked down by a tramcar in Courfenayplace yesterday, suffered from defective eyesight, for which complaint, he had been an outpatient of the Wellington Hospital for some time. The deceased's age was 76 years, and he had been an inmate of the Home for Incurables, Buckle-street, for the past three years. He left the home at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon to go for a walk, and was making his way across the roadway when he was struck by a. car. An inquest will be held at the Courthouse to-morrow afternoon.^
In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Ellen Hawthorne, through Mr. E. M. Beechey, sought an order for maintenance against her husband, James Hawthorn, a member of the 13th Reinforcements. It was shown that Hawthorn, before leaving the Dominion, assigned 4s per day to a woman in Gisborne, who, it was alleged, passed for his wife. The Magistrate (Air. L. G. Reid, S.M.), made an order allowing the '4s to Mrs. Hawthorn.
