THE SUGAR SHORTAGE

The following letter has been sent to the Prime Minister by eight grocers of Petone :— , " AVe, the undersigned grocers of Petone, wish to draw your attention to a very serious shortage in our supplies of sugar' from the Auckland Company. For the past two months sugar supplies .have been, as we are prepared to prove (notwithstanding the extra demand for jam-making purposes), below the normal amount of our trade requirements. In fact, we have been compelled to cut down our customers' orders for sugar to 61b lots, and in some cases have supplied brown sugar for table. We are strongly of opinion that supplies are being' kept back in expectation of an increase .after 30th June. If not, then some of the Sugar Company's customers are being favoured at our expense.. We sincerely hope yon will look into this matter promptly, and act', so that our customers may be able to obtain their normal supplies. Should there be any doubt as to the correctness of our contention, .we are prepared to submit ample evidence thereof if you so desire."
