"PARLIAMENT & THE PEOPLE"
"Parliament and the People" was tho subject of an address delivered at tho People's Picture Palace last night under the auspices of the Social Democratic Party by Mr. 1?. C. Webb, M.P. Mr. P. Hickey presided. Mr. Webb asserted that Parliament as at present constituted did nob represent the masses as it should, but private interests and large landholders. That was why so many people protested against ■ the action of the "Kaisers" within the Do- , minion who were holding up the, »c- *- cessaries of life unless the people 'were prepared to pay a high ransom. The Government had failed* dismally to pro* tect the people in this direction. The' speaker hoped that our soldiers would be given adequate pensions. It was the State's duty to see to that, and the State's duty alone. Speaking of the "shipping monopoly," Mr. Webb alleged that fares and freights had been unduly inflated, whereas there had been no ad' Vance 'in connection with the Stateowned railways.
