THE LATE MR. ORTON STEVENS

A. LARGE FUNERAL. Tho furteral of tho late Mr. Orton Stevens, resident secretary in New Zealand for the National Mutual Life Association, who was killed in the railway accident at Whangamarino, took place at the Lower Hutt on Saturday afternoon. The funeral was one of the largest that has even taken place in the Hutt Valley— the cortege bging neai'ly a mile in length. Mr. Keith Stevens, only son of deceased, was the chief mourner. The pall-bearers were : Messrs. W. G. Duthie, W. Mowbray, G. F. Pearce, F. H. Brodrick, J. K. Harty, H. B. Gordon, Dickson, and Helliwell. Amongst those present were : Hon. W. lh-aser, Mr. G. F. Pearce (local directors of the National Mutual office), R. Dickson (accountant) 'and the local office atalf, W. Helliwell (district manager, Christchurch), J. K. Harty (district manager, Auckland), and W. Anderson (district manager, Dunedin), E. W. Lowe (Australian Mutual Provident), George Robertson (Government Life), E. Stevens (Government Life), H. N. Liardet (Ocean Accident), P. D. Leslie (Colonial Mutual), H. E. Kempthorne (New Zealand Insurance), C. A. Richardson (Mutual Life), and D. A. Abercrombie (Queensland), Hon. F. M. B. Fisher (Minister of Customs), W. Callendar (Bank of New Zealand), G. E. Tolhurst (Union Bank), Hon. J. Duthie, M.L.0., Messrs. H. Baldwin (Mayor of Lower Hutt), J. W. M'Ewan Mayor of Petone), Captain D. J. Wfitson (Merchant Service Guild), Messrs. C. P. Skerrett, K.C., D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., Dr. Gilmer, Dr. M'Lean, Dr. Purdy, Messrs. W. M. Muir, G. Allport (Secretary for Marine), J. G. W. Aitken, James Macintosh, W. G. Foster, B. Hector ' (Registrar N.Z. University), C. H. Osmond (New Zealand University Fund), C. D. Morpeth (secretary Stock Exchange), J. Duncan (Levin and Co.), E. P. Bunny, F. D. Sladden, E. G. Pilcher, W. H. Russell, 0. S. Watkins, J. B. Ilarcourt, A. E. Whyte, W. Veitch, Ball, W. H. George, E. J. Hill, Professors Adamson and Yon Zedlitz, and others. Representatives were present on behalf of the 'Lower Hutt Borough Council, Wellington Racing Olub, the Hutt Valley Trotting Club, local bowling, golf, and other sports bodies. Over two hundred wreaths were received, including many from other parts of New Zealand. The Rev. J. T. M'Caw, minister of the Presbyterian Church, Lower Hutt, conducted the dervice at the graveside. The interment took place at the Taita Cemetery.
