PRICE OF MILK

TO THI EDITOR. Sir, — I saw by your issue of 20th just to hand the matter of the proposed rise in the price of milk li'oin 4d to 5d per quart is objected to not only by the citizens but also by some members of the City Council. They object to private individuals taxing the citizens to the tune of £36,000. I do not own a cow at present ; it is about 40 yearn eince I did milking to any extent. In thoso days I had. to go out into the fields at all times, in all weathers, returning with the cow often enough vet through to the ekin. Milk* sellers, too, have their share of the rain as well. I consider money gained by the milking of cows is honestly and hard-earned money. The cows have to be attended all through the winter months if they are to milk well and produce rich milk. There are inspectors to see, that the cow yards are in proper order, and no end of washing up to be done — not the pleasantCbt of jobs. If these same councillors are charged 3d or even 6d per glass for beer, would they think it too much? Would one- of them complain? How much would the beer be at per quart, and which takes the moot trouble to produce? How many dairymen, owners of cows, are as rich as the brewers? I am not a teetotaller either, but it seems to Trie peculiar some of those who like to have a say about what they have to sell should object to the impudence of milksellera doing likewise. — I am, etc., SUBSCRIBER. 26th March.
