NORTHLAND AND KARORI TRAMS

M» — — THE HILL-STREET ROUTE. A meeting of residents of Northland wae held last evening v to consider the question of a shorter tramway route between Northland and Karori and the City, and to appoint a deputation to wait on the City Council in reference to the matter. Mr. Lance George, who occupied lhe chair, said it was thought that the time had arrived when the tramway route between the city and Northland and Karori should be very much shortened. The increasing population of Northland, Ku. tori, and the western end of Kelburne eyevy d?.y made it plain that the people of these districts must have a speedier tram service to the city. --The fact of the motor-buses starting some little time ago was anothei' proof that the residents of Nortlilaoid and Karori were of that opinion. Various Mayors and councillors had promised that the work should be taken in hand. Surveys of several routes had been made. He understood that the City Engineer favoured the Hill-street route. Mr. J. Aston briefly sketched the history of the previous efforts which had been made to secure a shorter tramway route. The time had arrived when they should ascertain what the views of the City Council really were. He understood that the cost of a line by Hill-street would be some £3000- or £4000. At present scores of people left the cars at the Botanical Garden grate, Tinakori-road, and walked to Lambton-quay across the cemetery in less time than it took the car to go round the present circuitous route. All these peisons would remain in the cars, if a shorter line were adopted. The saving in car mileage would pay interest on cost of construction. A general discussion took nlare in which Messrs. Patterson, Williams, Put. nam, G. Gapes. Rutter, Hunt, Franklin, and A. Stubbs took part. The merits of the Kelburne, Arostreet, and Sydney-street routes were considered. Mr. G. Gapes moved that a deputation wait upon the City Council to urge the constructtoh of a tramway between Tinaiori-road and Molesworthstreet, via Hill-street. The motion was agreed to. and a deputation was appointed to wait upon the council in regard to the matter.
