RAILWAY ACCIDENT EXPRESS TRAIN DELAYED.
(Bt TELfOriAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) TIMAItU, 31st March. An accident delayed the second express this afternoon. A ram fair was being held at tho Smithfield show ;.'iounds, and the shunting of sheep trucks had been going on, when the express_ approached the loopline. Driver Harrington noticed the points at "halfcock," and put on tho emergency brake .and checked the pace. Tho engine and tender passed the points, but Iho fird carriage turned off and pulled the engine and tender olf the rails before stopping. The three derailed vehicles ploughed up the permanent way. The fireman (C. W. BeaUmout) jumped from the engine and struck the lover of the points, severely injuring his knee and leg. _ The promptness of the driver in applying the brakes doubtless saved greater damage. t The train was delayed some hours, while temporary rails were being laid. The passengers felt no great shock, apart from that caused by tho brake. CHRISTCHURCH, 31st March. The ferry steamer to Wellington had to be held back for the arrival of the second express.
