STEAMER DELAYED
In consequence of the mishap at Timaru yesterday to the second express bound for Christchurch, the steamer Wahine's departure from Lyttelton for Wellington was postponed until midnight. Fifteen minutes after this hour the train had not put' in an appearance, and it was decided to despatch the ferry steamer without any further delay. \n excellent run was made by the vessel, the distance being cut out from wharf to wharf in 9i hours, which is fifty minutes above her record for the trip. As a, result of the train not having connected, the total number of passengers— 96 saloon and 80 steerage — was comparatively small, compared with the usual list. The delay has been unfortunate for many passengers, in that a number intended connecting with the New Plymouth and _ Napier expresses this morning, but their late arrival from the South prevented this, and a much longer stay . than was anticipated has been /made in this city. Passengers for the North Island by , yesterday's second express have similarly been compelledl to remain an extra day in Christchutch.
