SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY MUNICIPAL ELECTION MEETING.
About 1400 people attended the Opera House last evening to hear an address by Mr. W. T. Mills in support of the candidaturo of Mr. Holland, the Social Democratic Party's nominee for the Mayoralty of Wellington. Mr. H. Campbell presided. Mr. Mills spoke at length on the aims of the Social Democratic Party so far as municipal government is concerned — emphasising the necessity of conducting the affairs of the city for the benefit of the whole of the citizens, instead for only a section. The Social Democratic Party, he said, stood for municipal employment of the unemployed, a municipal milk supply, markkets. and savings bank. He advocated running the tramways at the cost of service, with a universal fare, the cost of construction to be chargeable to ground rents. The clearing of slum areas and provision of workers' homes at cost were also part of the platform of the Social Democratic Party. Tho meeting was very enthusiastic, and at the close an appeal for funds to carry on the campaign lesulted in a generous response of over £30.
