TALISMAN CONSOLIDATED HIGH-GRADE ORE Al DEPTH. (*I TELEGRAPH— SPKCHL IO TH£ POST.) WAIHI, 'ihis, Day Although the conclusion i cached by Dr. Henderson, of tiu Geological Survey branch of the Mires Dep<u cment (uased on an examination ot the lode formations and deposits of gold at Karangahake just on two je-ira ago) aie of a pessimistic character, as tar ah the future of the field is coneoraed, it ib gi citifying to find that developments at depth in the Talisman mine continue to disclooc highly satisfactory results. The -most important work la hand ib the sinking ot No. 12 winze on the Maria Reel below No. 14 level, and this is now down rathor over 110 feet on the underlie of the lode, leaving about 40 feet to sink to leach the random of a fifteenth level. For the full distance sunk a strong body of rich sulphide ore has been in evidence, and an inspection made by your representative in company with the superintendent (Mr. H. Stansfield) showed 7 feet of quartz on the floor of ' the winze, the appearance of which pointed to values being fully maintained, if not increased, gofng down. During the last few feet of sinking, the rich laminated stone which had previously been confined to the hanging wall portion of the lode has also come in on the footwall section. The sinking of No. 19 winze below No. 14 level libs been resumed, and it is intended shortly to continue No.^ 6 winze down, the object being to get the opening up of a fifteenth level as tar advanced as possible by the time the Talisman shaft reaches the required depth. In the intermediate drive ncrth about 80 feet below No. 14 level (put out to relieve the pressure of water in the shaft), the reef in the face was small and poor when examined by the representative of the Geological Survey Department, but with a few feet of driving pay ore was made again, thus indicating that one of the local pinches characteristic of the Talisman mine in its development, both horizontally and vertically, had been passed through. The south drive at No. 14 level is being advanced through the Dubbo section, and a round of holes should connect with No. 16 winze from No. 13 level, which followed down pay ore for about 80 feet, after which the quartz became poorer, and continued low-grade down to No. 14 level. In the present face at No. 14 level the reef matter exposed shows improved appearance, and should carry more or less value. As this make of ore is coming in strongly from the footwall side, it seems probable that the south drive has for some little distance been off the main section of reef, and that it will be found to be in the east wall. When the connection with No. 16 winze has been effected, the drive will be continued on into the main Dubbo niiw where, pay ore was encountered furt&r, south on the level above No. 13. At No. 15 level south, work in No. 8 crosscut east to cut the Welcome lode iias' been resumed, and less than 100 feet of driving should intercept the reef. The crosscut is being advanced in country rock oi a very favruuable description, and is about 200 feet south of the point at which driving was discontinued on the Welcome at No. 11 level, where 'nothing of commercial value was met with. , The installation of the puihp workings in the Woodstock shaft is near ing completion, and everything should be in readiness to commence driving for the Msria Reef in two or three weeks. Forty to sixty feet of driving should cut the reef. CROWN MINES. Mining and milling operations at the Crown mine, Karangahake, are being carried on as usual with 'no change of moment to leport. Tho bulk of the ore being mined is coming from the Welcome Reef, which varies considerably in value at the different levels, the best etone being at No. 4b level, where the quartz won assayed well over £5 per ton. The Hauraki section of the Maria Reef at Nos. 4, 5, and 6 levels has also been contributing a fair tonnage of milling dirt, worth £2 per ton. In the rise on the Crown Reef over the back of the Waitawheta level the lode has been small, the average width being 14 inches and the value £2 5s per ton. WAIHI RETURN. (IT TELEGRAPH -PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, 27th_ March. For the period ended 14th March the Waihi Gold Mining Company crushed and treated 13,819 tons of ore for a return of bullion valued at £25,547. The return for the present period shows an increase of £70 over the value for the corresponding period of last year.
