MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M., 'at the Magistrate's Court this morning, four first offenders were fined amounts from 5s to 10s for drunkenness, and one ■was remanded to undergo curative* treatment. Jack Linklater, who had been previously convicted, wa3 fined ,lt)s. in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment. A further remand to 27th February was allowed in the case against Olaf (or Oliver) Johnson, charger with disobedience of a maintenance order. A seaman, William Murphy, admitted desertion from the steanrer Turakina at Wellington on sth February. Chief Detective Broberg explained that Murphy hitd left the Turakina, and joined the Koonya, where he got higher wages than on the ocean-going steamer. A sentence of ono month's imprisonment was imposed.
