General Huerta, the Provisional President, is asking the rebel leaders to confer, with the object of securing peace throughout Mexico. He has announced that he Intends to use ex-President Diaz's methods, if necessary, to secure peace' and order, no mat--ter what the cost. FAIR TRIAL FOR MADERO. WASHINGTON, 22nd February. Mr. Philander C. Knox, United States Secretary of State, has. announced that the Government intends to intervene to secure a fair trial for ex-Pre&ldont Madero. UNITED STATES DESIRE. TO AVOID INTERVENTION. , NEW Yor¥, 23rd February. President Taft, speaking at n. peace banquet, said that the United States Government would exercise every effort to avoid intervention in Mexico. He did not sympathise with the attitude of those who were advocating intervention for the purpose of gain or the exploitation of a rich country liko Mexico.
