PLAYING AREAS IN THE CITY

A deputation from representatives of sports bodies, headed by Mr. C. G. Wilson, well known in local cricket circles, is waiting on the Reserves Committee of the City Council this afternoon with a project for raising funds for the development and improvement of the playing areas of the city. The proposal is to hold a garden fete and carnival iro Newtown Park, on the lines of that held at Dunedin for a similar purpose in March last, when £1200 was raised. The fact that provision is already being made for lighting Newtown Park by electricity is urged as an additional reason why the gathering should be held there, and it is also proposed to have a big art union, with tourist tickets for Australia, the North Island of New Zealand, and a New Zealand Southern trip as the prizes. The committee approved of the proposal and decided to ask the Mayor to call a public meeting at as early a date as possible to consider the matter.
