Leather is to be dearer so the New Zealand Tanners' Association has determined. "Of course it will meant a rise in the price of boots," said a gentleman in authority when spoken to by a Post reporter. Just how much the increase will be cannot at present be stated, but Id per lb rise in leather is a big advance. 'Practically all boots of New Zealand manufacture will be affected. Importations of leather— sole leather principally—are not so much used in manufacture as in repair work. The cause of the rise is the competition of other countries in the leather market. "Canada and tho United States snap up all our good leather that they can lay hands on. The only w*iy to fix the matter is with an export duty on hides." "That would raise a storm," remarked the reporter. "Yes," was the rejoinder, but it's what the people interested in boots are aiming at." Mr. Brown, Government Poultry Expert, is delivering a series of addresses in the Wairarapa this week, under the auspices of the Farmers' Union. Mr. E. A. King, who has been headmaster of the Kaiwaiwai School for come years past, is leaving the district shortly to take up the position of headmaster of the Annet School, Jiear Springfield, North Cariterbury. Mr. and Mtb. King have established themselves in popular favour in the Kaiwaiwai district, and their departure will occasion much' regret. Mr, A. A. Paape, general Becretary of the New Zealand SpoTts Protection League, paid a to Featherston yesterday, and made preliminary arrangenipnts in connection with taking steps to form a branch here. To-ittorrow a bazaar id aid of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will be opened in St. James's HalJ, Lower Hutt.
