FISH MARKETS

REGULATIONS RECOMMENDED. The Market Committee reported to tho City Council last evening that it had carefully considered the quest inn of the 1 regulations required to control tho fish markets, recently erected, and to bo opened in a few days. It recommended that the following arrangements be approved :—: — "Applications have been invited for the position of salesman to take charge of the market, at a salary of £156 per annum. Applications are returnable on Thursday, the 19th instant, and the committee desire authority from the Council to go through the applications and make an appointment, "The market to be open for the sale of fish, etc., on Mondays to Fridays from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m., and on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., exclusive of public holidays. j "That the charge for accommodation be fixed at 2s 6d per day per stall, and a commission of 5 per cent, be charged on allfish sold to cover the expense of selling. i ■ "All fish on entering the market to to be priced by the owner and sold accordingly by the salesman. The price will be marked distinctly for the convenience of- buyers. Large fish will be sold at per lb, and the smaller kind at per bundle. "On no account will fish be 'reserved or placed on one side for any person. "The recommendations dealing with daya and hours of opening, charges, and commission are ill the nature of a trial, and will be subject to revision at the end of three months' working. "After the appointment of a salesman, the completion .of the necessary printing, and the installation, of a telephone, table and scales, together with sundry small requisites, the matkets will be opened as speedily as possible." The chairman of the committee (Councillor Fletcher) moved the adoption of the report. The following schedule of the duties of the salesman at tho markets was appended :— • ' I To be in. charge of and conduct the sale of all fish brought to the market. To allot all stalls at the commencement of the day. To check the quantities of fieh received, . and forward all money received and a statement of all sales daily to the City Treasurer. To inspect all- fish received and to condemn, any not fit for human consumption. • To maintain order in the fish market,' and generally control all work in connection with the market in accordanco with directions received from time to time from the Town Clerk. Councillor M'Kenzie objected to the hours of the market. It only meant creating another fish shop in the city.
