CHRISTCHURCH, 27th June. At the annual meeting of the Canterbury General Labourers' Union, a letter was received from Mr. J. Payne, M.P. for Grey Lynn, in reply to a resolution forwarded to him by the union, a6king him lo vote against any Government that would not agree to repeal the compulsory clauses of the Defence Act. The letter concluded as follows: — "Believe me, if it comes down to my vote at the coming no-confidence motion to save the Government, one of the things as my price will bo the abolishing of the compukory clauses of the Defence Act."
