BURGLARS SURPRISED
AUCKLAND, 27th June. G.onstablo Hill saw a man enter tho Clarendon Hotel through a trap-door at 1 o'clock this morning. With Sergeant Cowan, he, listening outside, heard the cash register ring. Both entered the trap-dqor, and proceeded to th© bar, where they discovered two powerfullybuilt men, who submitted to arreaL quietly. One was hiding under the counter, and the other was trying to hide behind a partition. No money was missing. At the Police Court, Ernest Kirchirtz and Char]e& Beynoids, a German and Canadian, respectively, were charged with breaking and entering tho Clarendon Hotel. They were remanded till Wednesday. MOTOR-CAR FATALITY-MAN-SLAUGHTER CASE NAPIEE, 27th June. At the Supreme Court, the case against Kuku Matene Ropiha, charged with manslaughter by causing th© death of two Natives through the overturning of a motor car, alleged, to have been recklessly driven by Tiun at Waipawa. concluded this afternoon. A verdict of guilty •\ya6 returned with a btrong recommendation to mercy. The jury added a rider that the law should be amended so as to make it illegal for any person to drive a motor who has not passed a stringent examination as to fitnews. Sentence will be paseed to-morrow. SENSATIONAL ESCAPE OF CHILDREN CHRISTCHURCH, 2TCh June. Two children nstmed Rasmu&sen had a sensational eecapo from death on Tuesday at Otira. On© of them found a plug of gelignite near a, heap of woou and hit it with an axe. There was a terrific explosion. Both children were picked up for dead, but an examination showed that neither was seriously injured.
