NATIONAL ART GALLERY
SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS. As the movement in support of the National Art Gallery is one calculated to greatly promote the educational, social and commercial well-being of the country, the banks doing ■ business in the Dominion have been- approached to support an institution that will be of much value to the. people. Yesterday the matter wae considered by the directors of the Bank of New Zealand, and the board decided to give the sum of one hundred guineas to the fund. The firm of Levin and Co., and Mr. Vivian Eiddiford will each present a picture to the National Gallery. !No earn, is mentioned now, but the value of the pictures will be added to the fund which is being raised to secure the City Council grant of £1000. Thetotal amount subscribed in cash to date is £418 7s. Mr. A. E. Mabin, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, has undertaken to do all in his power to help the national movement. He hae given notice to move at the next meeting of this organisation : — "That this chamber accords its hearty support to the movement in favouT of establishing a fund for the purpose of purchasing ' pictures for the proposed National Art Gallery in Wellington."
