THORNDON WINS TEAMS' CHAMPIONSHIP. SWIFTS CLUB'S CARNIVAL. FREYBERG SECURES THE BRACELET, Taking into consideration Friday's rough weather, the Swifts Swimming Club was lucky to have such a perfect day for its twelfth annual carnival at 1 Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon. So hot was the sun, and so alluring the water, that many of the spectators must have wished themselves competitors. The club had reason to feel satisfied with the "gate,"' and the large attendance was no doubt due to the inclusion in the programme of the 500 yds Flying Squadron intercliib teams' championship, for the Walker and Hall Cup. Three clubs had entered — Thorndon, Swifts, and Wellington— and the race was very interesting. Thorndon certainly won somewhat easily, but the struggle between the remaining teams to a great extent made up for this. Some excellent times were registered, aa will be been from, a full descriDtion of the race given below. An outstanding feature was that C. Brice (Thorndon) equalled the New Zealand record for the c' 100," namely 64sec. The race for the ladies' bracelet was a splendid one, and showed that the handicapper knew the majority of the competitors to within a second. The event was chiefly noticeable for the splendid performances of B. C. Frcyberg, who at present appears to be in splendid "nick." Soon after he had swum in the cup race, for which, by the way, conflicting times were given, he was called upon to swim, in his heat." Although ho \va3 • placed 4yds behind the scratch men (Wilson, Ashford, Fordham, and A. Smith), he wae able to gain first place. In the final the Swifts' crack swam even better than previously, •and, again getting into the first place, he cut the distance out in 64 l-ssec— one-fifth of a second off the record. 1 During the afternoon tea was served I by members of the club, and selections wore contributed by tho Tramways Band. Officials were as follow :—Referee, Mr. T. Shields; polo referee, Mr. G. badd ; judges, Messrs. G. Sadd, A. 11. Stevenson, LL Lee; starter, M>\ X J. Fleming ; timekeepers, Messrs. G. S. Hill, W. H. It was a fairly good race, but there were so' many competitors that several got bad passages. In tact, four of them had to drop out because of this. Time, 32 2-ssec. 500 yds Teams Championship (for Walker and Hall Cup .and five gold medals valued at £1 Is each;.—Thorndon (R. Healy, F. Roberts. C. Brice R Ronayoe, K. Nelson), 1; Swifts 18. C. Jiealy went off first for Thorndon, and he was accompanied by O'Neill and iordham. The Thorndonite made the pace very warm, and he was first to reach the 50yds mark, with O'Neill and I'ordham close up. Coming down the next "50." Healy Srew away about 4yds, and Fordham, very tired, was last to touch. Brice was next to leave for the winners, but he ran right away from Murrell and Smith and had about syds lead at the "150," which he increased to about 7yds at the "200." The other two were swimming stroke lor stroke, and when they had touched Nelson was already well op to the "250," " crawling " in splendid style. Lh& lead at this mark was quite 20yds. Both Patevson and Mawby, however, gained about 6yds on reaching 300 yds.' Nelson having touched, Ronayne dived off, followed by Capper and Wilson, and he increased the lead to 30yds at the "400," while the others were still swimming together. In the final " 100 " Roberts was 30yds dowa the baths before Freyberg was able to leave, and, later, Stranger. Roberts, of course, had everything his own way, but the other two were swimming strongly and together, and the result was a second place, by. a narrow margin, for the Swifts' representatives. The official time given was smin 33<sec, which will be found to slightly vary from total given by adding together the following individual times: — Brice 64sec, Pioberts 65 l-Seec, Healy 65 l-ssec, Ronayne 66 2-ssec,' and Nelson 70sec.' These amount to smin 30 4-ssec, or an av<a-age of Q6sec One watch gave Freyberg's time as 64 3-ssec. 100 Yards Ladies' Bracelet Club Handicap.—First heat : E. S.
