PERSONAL MATTERS.

Mr. E. A. Christie, of Cuba-street (a son-in-law of the Hon. W. Hall- Jones), who went to England on business last I'eoruary, returned to Wellington by the Corinthic to-day. Captain Lascelles, of the Third Dragoon Guards, whose term of engagement with the New Zealand Defence Department has expired, will return to England by the Athenic to-morrow. Mr. Frederick Bryant, of Tunbridge Wells, England, who resided in Wellington, and afterwards in Palmerston North, until a few years ago, arrived in Wellington from Sydney by the Ulimaroa to-day on a brief visit to the Dominion. Professor J. G. Black, who is reverenced as a sort of professional father by perhaps half the doctors in New Zealand, contemplates retiring from the chair of chemistry at the Otago University. At the close of the next university ses- j sion, 31st March, 1911, he will have com- 1 pleted his fortieth year in the service of the university Professor Black is 77 years of age, and is entitled to a retiring allowance of £300 per annum. Dr. Chappie, M.P. for Stirlingshire, Scotland, who presided at the Wellington Swimming Club's meeting, was pre- ! sented with a token of esteem from the members. The presentation was made by Mr. R. C. Renner, who was the first captain of the club when it was formed in 1894. Mr. Renner extended the congratulations of the chib to Dr. Chappie on his being elected to the House of Commons. The success of the club Mr. Renner attributed largely to the enthusiasm of the president. Dr. Chappie, in thanking members for their gift, wished the club every success in the future, and he hoped it would go on increasing its membership as it had done in the past.
