PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.
The fortnightly meeting of the Society for Prevention *of Cruelty to Animals was held last evening, Mr. Jameson presiding. The following gifts were acknowledged : — Mr. J. ±L G-. Mowley, £2 2s; Mr. Llewellyn, Mr. Smith, Dr. Herbert, and Greymouth Coal Company, £1 Is each; Miss E. Ludwig, 10s; Jack, J. S. Mickard, Veitch and Allen, C. P. Powles, Wellington Timber Co., D. O'Connor, and Dr. Mason, 5s each ; Mr. G. MacMorran, 3s 6d ; Misses Pritchard, Lord, Mesdames Moss, Birstow, Cenci, West and Knowles, Dr. Gilmer, and Messrs C. Watson, Carter, D. G. A. Cooper, S. Madford, M'llwraith,, G. Flux, W. Harrington, C. H. Parker, W. J. Guerin, and Lord 2s 6d each ; Mr. H. L. Tonka, 2s : total, £10. A special gift of £5 5s was received from Mrs. A. E. Atkins. Mr. Seed (inspector) reported ' several cases of cruelty for -the pact fortnight, some of which were lengthily discussed by members. ' The annual report of the inspector, which was read, Drought forward many interesting facte, amd showed that there had been 21 convictions during the past year, and £47 had beeai paid in fines.
