GISBORNE, 12th August. The Borough Council to-day accepted the loan, negotiated for by the Mayor in London. The amount is £175,000, aired tho terms are 4 per cent., subject to commission charges 2 p»f cent., and other conditions. BRASS BANDS' ASSOCIATION. PALMERSTON N., 12th August. At tills last North Island band content, held at Wanganui, the North Island Brass Bands' Association decided that the next contest should be held at Palmerston. This evening a laigelyattended meeting of townspeople decided that the cc-ntest shall be held in February, on the show ground if possible. The prize money has not yet been fixed, but it will probably bo the same, as was given at tho Wanganui contest last year. CLAY PIGEON CHAMPIONSHIP. CHEISTCHURCH, 12th August. The third clay pigeon championship of New Zealand was decided to-day, D. Eraser n.nd J. Simpson, 29 each, tieing. They divided the cash, and, in the shoot-off, Simpson won the championship medal on the seventh round. SHEARERS' DISPUTE. CHRISTCHURCH, 12th August. While the- Conciliation Commissioners axe not to be asked to make recommendations foi <i Dominion award in the shearing dispute, tho dispute, so far as Canterbury is concerned, is to be referred to them to report to the Arbitration Court. The Tavanaki Petroleum Company icccived an unusual reqiiost to-day from a resident of Auckland province, who wrote for a supply o£ petroleum, to be used in making pills for treating bronchitis.
