ENQUIRY INTO FOUNDERING OF THE KOI

NELSON, Bth April. The nautical enquiry into the foundering of the steamer Koi when nearing Nelson Harbour, on 30th March, was held today before Mr. Evans, S.M., and Captains M'Nab and Clark. Captain Scully, the owners, and consignor* were represented by counsel. The Collector of Customs appeared for the Marine Department. The evidence of the master was to the effect that 25 to 30 tons of cargo were taken aboard at Motueka, and properly stowed, and the deck load of 282 sheep were hurdled in. He was not aware that the license to carry deck cargo had expired. He took the usual course, and experienced no trouble till near Nelson, when the vessel struck and was thrown on her beam ends by successive rollers, and sent to the bottom. Witness was on the bridge at the time. The vessel was well found in every respect. The evidence of other members of the crew and of the harbour master was in the direction of showing that everything possible had been done to avert tho casualty. The court reserved its decision.
