VICTORIA COLLEGE.

* INAUGURAL ADDRESS. Professor H. B. Kirk, chairman of the Professorial Board, delivered an inaugural address at the opening of tho firs*term at Victoria College yesterday afternoon. He spoke of the ideals to be pursued by a university student. The function of tho university was- not to supply a "polish" to the student, as ■some believed, nor was it exactly to imprint the "hall mark of culture." The univ«rsitjr was responsible for moral as well as intellectual development. The ultimate object of the professors was not to get students thiough examinations. Tho mind of the student should be developed properly, so that he might think correctly and express his thoughts clearly. It was the duty of the professor to develop the student's powers of thinking. Among students of a university mutual help was an essential. Their associations should be a process of refinement, and every student should always bear i*n mind the honour of the university.
