FINE OF £20 FOR SLY GROGSELLING.

Mary Spencer, boardinghou3e-keeper, Cambridge-terrace, was prosecuted in the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., on a charge that, not being a licensed pernon, she said liquor to Arthur J. it. Palmer, police probationer. She pleaded not guilty. Mr. i Wilford appeared for the defence. Evidence was given for the prosecution that two probationers had made- visits to defendant's house and had been supplied by her with drinks, for which they paid. A search of the house had been made, resulting in bottles of beer and numerous "empties" being found. Defendant admitted giving the men I drinks, but denied that she had received payment. One of the probationers had attempted to force money on her. The Magistrate held that she must be convicted. He imposed a fine of £20, tho alternative being one month's imprisonment. Ono week was allowed in which to pay the money.
