The clu,b anticipates a mo?t (successful ceason. tI'BESS ASSOCIVIION.I CLAIM FOR INCOME TAX ABANDONED. DUNEDIN, 30th March. In November last the Commissioner of Taxes sued J. L. Dennirton, agent for certain non-resident traders, for income tax. The amount originally claimed was £9 3s lid, but on Mr. Denniston refusing to pay the Commissioner „,„,,. sed the amount at £34 9s 9d, and sued for that amount/ The magistrate held that defendant was not protected under the Act, and gave judgment for the Commissioner. Defendant lodged an appeal to the Supreme Court on a point of law. After further consideration, however, the Crown has decided -that the magistrate's decision cannot be supported, and has intimated that no effort wil' be made to collect the tax. THE GOVERNOR'S TOUR. DUNEDIN, 30th March. His Excellency the Go\ornor continued his tour of Otago to-day. He visited Palmerston this morning and was accorded an enthusiastic reception. He was entertained at luncheon there, and subsequently came on to Port Chalmers, where he again received a welcome. He will remain at Port Chalmers till to- j morrow morning, and will then come to Dunedin, opening the Hocken Library in the afternoon. On Friday he will proceed South. FROZEN MEAT TRADE. CHRISTCHURCH, 30th March. A meeting of representatives of the Nevr Zealand frozen meat companies wa^ held this afternoon in the oftice of the | Christchurch Meat Company to consider j various representations made by the recent conference, and also the proposals submitted by Mr. W. D. Lysnar. The meeting was not open to the press. A YOUN6 MAN'S DEATH. NELSON, 30th March. At the inquest on the body of a young' man named William Knight, a porter, who was found on the road at Pokororo early on Tuesday morning and placed in a shed where he subsequently died, the medical evidence showed that death icsulted from a fractured skull evidently the result of a fall from a horse. It appeared that the deceased had been attending the tports at Motueka and had been drinking with othei youths. The coroner returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence and directed the police to make exhaustive enquiry into the drinking among the youths which had I evidently taken place at the sports and lin town. Hs was satisfiod that the men j who found the porter on the road had no reason to believe that he was injuied. EARTHQUAKE IN CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, 30th March. An earthquaka occurred in Christchurch last night shortly after 8.15. The record taken by the seismometer at the local magnetic observatory was developed this morning, and it shows that two very slight shocks were registered. The first lasted about thirty seconds, beginning at 18.4 minutes past eight and ending at 18.9 minutes past eight. The second shock lasted about thirty-six seconds, beginning at 19.6 minutes past eight and ending at 20.2 minutes past eight. The first shock seemed to ha\c ■ had the stionger motion of the two.
