EASTER AT THE CHURCHES.

BRIGHT AND HEARTY SERVICES. . The festival of • the resurrection wss celebrated at all Anglican, and Roman Catholic Churches in the city yesterday. At St. Paul's Pro-cathedral in the morning Bishop Wallis preached from the text "I am He that livetb and was dead," directing attention from the great mystery of the Atonement to the living, ascended Christ and all the Resurrection meant to man. At. St. Peter's, Willis-street, Rev. G. P. Davys conducted the morning service and the Rev. H. A. Kennedy (Horbury, Yorks), one of the forerunners of the great Anglican mission which is to be held in Sew Zealand, preached in the evening. The church was beautifully decorated. At St. Mark's, Sussex-square, the services were conducted by Rev. A. M. Johnson, vicar. The Easter music was a feature of the services. The services at St. Thomas's, Xewtown, were bright and hearty and largely attended. At Roseneath Anglican Church, Rev. D. C. Bates preached in j the morning and Rev. C. E. Tobin in the evening. At. St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Buckle-street, Arch- i bishop Redwood sang Pontifical High Mass in the forenoon. There were large attendances at all the services throughout the day. At the Basilica, Hill-street, ReV. Father Herbert preached a most eloquent sermon on the mystery of the Resurrection. At Solemn High Mass Father Herbert was celebrant and Fathers Graham and Hickson were deacon and sub-deacon respectively. 'Solemn benediction was given by Archbishop Redwood in the evening. Easter was duly observed at the principal Presbyterian Churches in the city. At St. John's Rev. Dr. Gibb preached ( both morning and evening on the Re- ' surrection, delivering powerful addresses on this great Article of Faith of j the Christian Church. In the evening sermon special reference was made to the Young Women's Bible Class conven* tion. The Church was crowded and the music was both bright and hearty. Mr. Maughan Barnett conducted, and the day was concluded with the Hallelujah Chorus, played 1 by the organist. At Kentterrace Church Rev. J. K. Elliott took the opportunity to specially refer to the Children's Home at Brooklyn. There was a large number of children present from the Home, under the care of Mr. and Mrs. Mills. The youngsters were introduced by Mr. Elliott to the congregation, who were thus enabled to see how well they had been looked after. Rev. J . Gibson Smith preached to large congregations at St. Andrew's Church, and special Easter music was sung at all services. St. James', Newtown, was well attended. Rev. W Shirer, minister of the church, preached in the morning from the text "I know that my Redeemer liyeth." Rev. W. J. Comrie preached in the evening. Special services were also held at the Island Bay Presbyterian Church both afternoon and evening, at which Mr. Shirer preached. A service was held in the Slissions to Seamen's Church on Good Friday morning, when Mr. Jas. Moore preached. In the evening a lantern service on the Crucifixion and other incidents in the life of Christ was held, the pictures Deing shown by Mr. G. \V. Barltrop and explained by Mr. Moore. Miss Whaler sang Yesterday, harvest thanksgiving services were held, and there were large congregations. Mr. Moore preached m the morning and Mr. Yung Liang Hwang read the lessons. Mr. Moore also preached in the evening. Mr. J. S. Ciunmjngs read the evening lessons and Miss 'tfurße;- 'sang a solor MV. JVftfafcfc presided at the organ. Services were held both morning and evening at St. Luke's, Wadestown, and St. Anne's, Northland. Both churches were prettily decorated, and large congregations were present at all the services.
