LAWN TENNIS. PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT.
TO-DAY'S PLAY. Play was continued to-day in the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association tournament on the Thormloii and Brougham Hill grounds. "Play throughout was close and interesting, some of the contests on the Thomdon ground, where the Senior Championship matches took place, being particularly good. Following are details of the play :—: — SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. Men's Singles. — Third round : Brown beat Young, 6—o6 — 0 and 6—3.6 — 3. Semi-final : Smythe boat Brown, 7—5, 6—l.6 — 1. Men's Doubles. — Semi-final : Cox and Swanston beat Howe and Young, 6—l,6 — 1, 6-3. Ladies* Singles. — Second round : Miss Miss Batham boat Miss Livingstone, 6—4,6 — 4, 6—o.6 — 0. Third lound : Miss Nunneley beat Miss Simpson, 6—l,6 — 1, o—l.o — 1. Fourth round : Miss Nunneley beat Miss Batham, 6—o, &— O. Ladies' Doubles. — First lound : Miss Travers and Miss Marthant beat Miss Newman and Miss Dimant. 6—l,6 — 1, 6—2.6 — 2. Combined Doubles. — First round : Miss Marchant and Young beat Miss Williams and Cox by default. The scores were 6—36 — 3 and 5—35 — 3 in favour of the latter couple when default was made. Miss Travers and Salmond beat Mrs. Holmes and Smythe, 6—o, 6—3.6 — 3. Second round : Miss Travers and Salmond beat Miss Simpson and Prouse, o — 4, 6-3. The finals of the ladies' games will be played off on Monday at the Thorndon court. JUNIOR. The play for the Junior Championship was continued at Brougham Hill this morning. Men's Singles. — Semi-final : Wright beat Parker, 6—2, 6—3; Eller beat Jones. 3—6. 6—2, 6—3. Ladies* Singles. — Second round . Miss Webb beat Miss Home, 9—4.9 — 4. Semifinal : Miss Davis beat Miss Williams, 9—2. Ladies' Doubles. — Misses Bennett and Home beat Misses Davis and Sullivan, 9—4 ; Mrs. Burton and Miss Morgan beat Misses Rothschild aud Hayes, 10—8 ; Misses Francis and Atmore beat Misses Warded and Devine, 9—5.9 — 5. Combined Doubles. — Miss Webb and Sheppard beat Miss Atmore and Parker. 9— 6 ; Miss Hayes and Wright heal Miss Newman and Eller, 9—3; Miss Rothschild and Howe beat Miss Webb and Sheppard, 10-^3; Miss Morgan and Clarke beat Miss Bennett and Cornell ; Miss Dimant and Ward beat Mrs. Burton and Holm wood, 9—4;9 — 4; Miss Dimant and Ward beat Miss Morgan and Clarke, 9-6.
