Professor Park, of Dunedin, arrived in Wellington yesterday mornhig. Mr. R B. Vincent's appointment a« Assistant Secretary to the Treasury v gazetted. Mr. F. J. Penty, who recently underwent a serious operation, is now very much better. Tho Rev. W. Shirer has been appointed chaplain of the Wellington South Boy Scouts. Lieutenant Walter Cairns, of the sth Battalion Wellington Rifle Volunteers, has resigned his commission. Captain Hugo, Inspector of Fire Brigade*, has returned from a visit of inspection to the South Island brigades. Lieutenant James Prendeville, of the Eketahuna Mounted Rifle Volunteers, has been promoted to the rank of | captain. Mr. John H. Salmon, who was for some years associate to Mr. Justice Sim, has commenced practice as a solicitor in Hamilton. One of the original Mauriceville small farm settlers, Mr. Neils Assersen, passed away on Tuesday night last at the age of 78 years. Captain Edward Page, Eketahuna, Mounted Rifle Volunteers, has been placed on the active list (unattached) with the rank of captain. The Rev. Geo. W. Smailes, cur.#3 of St. Sepulchre's, Auckland, has been appointed vicar of Waihi, in succession to the Rev. A. S. Butkland. Mr. E. J. Reid, relieving officer of the A.M. P. Society, willjact as district secretary at Nelson during the absence on holiday leave of Mr. Jas. Hair. Mr. D. Hay, selector of the New Zealand cricket team, and Mr. Whittaker, vice-president of the Auckland Cricket Association, are on a visit to Wellington. Mr. C. A. Marquis, secretary of the Linwood Bowling Club, was farewelled by tho members last week, and presented with a mark of esteem on his leaving for Wellington. Mr. Kinnear Ross has been appointed an inspector under the Slaughtering and Inspection Act; and Mr. Alexander A. Johnson has been appointed a Government veterinarian. Mr. S. J. Dyer, of the staff of Messrs. J. Duthie anf Co., Ltd., has been presented by the firm and his fellowemployees with marks of esteem on the occasion of his marriage. Lieutenant Cyril G. Collins, Wellington Post and Telegraph Riflo Volunteers, has resigned his commission, and has been placed on the active list (unattached), with the rank of lieutenant. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., leaves for Napier on Monday on a short holiday. Dufing his absence Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., will attend to both the civil and criminal business of the Magistrate's Court. Mr. M. Laracy has bean elected secretary pro tern. of the New Zealand Shearers' Union, vice Mr. P. F. Darcy, who lias mysteriously disappeared, but whose books and accounts the auditors found correctly and creditably kept. Mr. George lngtis, one of Onehunga's oldest residents, passed away at his residence, Selwyn-street, on Tuesday morning, aged 80 years, says the Herald. For many years past he had occupied the position of treasurer to the Presbyterian Church. Messrs R. B. Davies, G. Day, A. Williams, J. Bewley, C. A. Wilson Jordan, and D. Campbell, are representing the Wellington Churches at tne Easter Conference of the Church of Christ for the Middle District of New Zealand, which is being held at Spring Grove, Nelson. Mr. John Graham, M.P. for Nelson, and chairman of the Nelson Harbour Board, is at present on a visit to Auckland. He is accompanied by Mrs. Graham and their two daughters. They will leave next week for Rotorua, Wairakei, and Taupo. Mr. S. J. Willa, formerly of the Government Insurance Department, was on Thursday last farewelled by the staff of the Carrara Ceiling Company, Ltd., on the occasion of his leaving to become accountant to Mr. J. Ilott's advertising agency, of this city. Members of the Pctone Cricket Club on Thursday evening presented Mr. M. Joyce, who is leaving for Australia, with a travelling bag. Mr. W. S. Brice made the presentation, and at the same time handed Mr. Joyce the medal donated by Mr. Nuttall for the best-all-round field. Mr. G. Powell, who lias been chosen to represent Australasia at the conference of delegates of various branches of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners to be held in London, was entertained at Scott's Rooms, Mannersstreet, on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance of fellow-members and friends. Mr. Harry Warner, who presided, said it was the first time the Dominion had pent a member Home to the council. Among the toasts were the "Amalgamated Society," "The Organising Secretary," and others in keepI ing with the occasion.
