HOME POLITICS. IRISH LAND BILL.

PROGRESS IN COMMITTEE. ' REDUCED GOVERNMENT MAJORITIES. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) ! LONDON, 10th July. The House of Commons considered the Irish Land' 'Bill in 'Committee yesterday. 'Mr. Redmond moved an amendment to omit the increase in the purchase of an annuity, which under the first clause I was intended to provide sufficient interest to ensure the issue of 3 per cent, stock. The amendment, which was supported [ toy air. Wyndham (ex-Secretary for Ireland) and other Unionists, was negatived by 180- votes to 149. i The closeness of the division caused [ great excitement. Then a small amendment, standing in the name of IMr. Birrell (Chief Secretary for Ireland), was carried by 177 to 143. • 'Finally, a motion that the clause stand as part of the Bill was carried by '172 to 140, amid Unionist cries of I "Drop the [Bill!" j There was a sparse- attendance of Liberals, due to the strain of an allnight sitting, and to the distractions of tho Budget campaign in the provinces. Welsh members are deliberately abstaining from all debates on the 'Bill, because the Welsh Disestablishment 'Bill was shunted in its favour. As a result of this the [Labour Party alone saved the Government yesterday from defeat. Mr. H. J. P. Belloc (Liberal), Mr. James O'Grady (Labour), <Mr. Will Thonlo (Labour), and Mr. J. R. Clynes (Labour) voted with the minorities. A uniform complaint throughout yesterday's debate was that the first clause would bring land purchase absolutely to a deadlock. Mr. ißirrell, who relied on his departmental adviser, argued that the provisions of the clause were just and fair. SEEKING COUNSEL. CHANCELLOR CONFERS WITH 'EDITOR'S. LONDON, 10th July.
